BLT: The BLT mouse is a modification of the SCID-Hu model which was developed by Joseph McCune in the early nineties. To construct the BLT model, NOD/SCID mice are cotransplanted with human liver and thymus tissues along with autologous CD34+ hematopoietic stem cells. Development of a robust human hemato-lymphoid system is observed between 12-16 weeks post engraftment with human cells and tissues. This model is also being used extensively in HIV research and studying of virus-specific human immune responses. The BLT mice are, however, susceptible to thymic lymphoma and may not allow long term studies (average lifespan ~8.5 months).
More information on the development and ongoing research involving different humanized mouse models can be found in the ‘Relevant Literature’ section.
